WIND IS THE 'ENGINE' OF SAILING

Weather in Greece is mostly calm and easy to predict. We are a country well known for the high winds coming from the North known as 'Meltemi'. In general summer in Greece is quite hot. Starting from May when wind is more suitable for sailing with an average of 15-22 knots of wind most of times seen our wind meters. June and mid of July will be a bit more windy but still it will be pleasant since wind speeds would be from 14-27 knots. Of course no one can predict (only God I suppose) the wind for the upcoming years. August on the other hand is mostly windy. Last year (2014) however was the calmest August of the last decades. September to follow is trully the best time for our sailing vacation. Wind is there, but is quite stable coming from the North. October is again a nice month in terms of sailing potential however you need to be prepared for temperatures around 20-22 degrees.

BEST VACATION IS A COMBINATION OF LOCATION & WEATHER

All these years that I am in this business I see  a lot of my sailing friends coming in Greece having a specific route in mind. I do not suggest that this is not the way to do it but always you need to have a backup plan in case the wind is quite high. A lot of people have read about specific islands such as Mykonos or Santorini and when they arrive here they do not discuss not going there no matter what the weather might be. I do not feel that this is the correct practice. You need to select a more secure location in terms of wind protection and I guarantee you that you will surely have a better time. On the other case you risk of going into an island and remain stuck in the port for many days-which by the way-does not appear nice to me in terms of vacation, especially if you have a family on-board.

WHERE AM I PROTECTED?

There are some areas that are surely more protected in terms of sea waves and calm waters. Most of the times this is the area of the Saronic gulf. No matter what the wind speed might be you will not find (90% of the times) big waves of difficult crossings. If you decide to sail in the South sides of the islands you can be covered and safe plus your boat will be more secure. My advise is based on the fact what sailing vacation is for my self. If you want to live extreme conditions and emotions you are free to do so but to me it does not appear such a beautiful experience.
