Syros is located in the heart of the Cyclades. For this reason, the island is often used as a connection hub between the Northern and Southern islands of the Aegean. The capital of Syros as well as of the Cyclades is Ermoupolis. The name originates from the Greek God Hermes and was the most significant port town during the 19th century. The sheer size and location made it a main trading and transportation center during antiquity. The island is lively all year round, has a large local population, as well as universities and businesses which operate throughout the year. It is truly a site to behold.
The size, variety of color, impressive Cycladic and Venetian architecture are impressive to say the least. The city's main attractions include its harbor, the Archaeological Museum and the Municipal Theater of Syros. Be sure to explore the architectural masterpiece of Miaouli Square, its gorgeous neoclassical buildings, glamorous square and statue of Admiral Andreas Miaoulis, a hero of the Greek War of Independence. Impressive architecture, beautifully colored buildings and stone paved alleys are only some of the characteristics of this wonderful city. Being larger in comparison to other Cycladic islands, Ermoupolis is a favorite location amongst visitors and locals offering a variety of restaurants, bars and a unique atmosphere all year long!
Vaporia is an area very close to the port of Ermoupolis. It is only 5-10 minute walk towards the upper north side of the town. This is a prestigious and noble area to visit. Its focal point is the exquisite and iconic blue dome church of Agios Nikolaos, while the preserved imposing manors perched atop rocks compose an awe-inspiring architectural masterpiece. Enjoy strolling around one of the most beautiful spots on the island, have a dinner tasting local delicasies or drink luscious cocktails in one of the places that offer exceptional views of the Aegean.
The fishing village of Kini is a gorgeous little seaside settlement where visitors can enjoy delicious fresh seafood, incredible sunsets and a relaxed, chilled out atmosphere. Its sandy bay is a glorious golden brown which leads into translucent and immaculate waters. This area is easily accessible by yacht and approximately 9km away from Ermoupolis. It has some interesting sights such as the Catholic Church of the Virgin Mary, the monastery of Agia Varvara, a museum of fishing vessels and a small aquarium. There is also a very unique monument of the mermaid Virgin Mary in the Harbor. The sunsets are absolutely gorgeous in this wonderful natural setting in the Cyclades.

7 friends sailed for one week and visited amazing islands. The boat was in great shape with an awesome skipper. Everyone was friendly and easy to work with. Their suggestions of islands, restaurants, beach, tips etc. were perfect. Our captain stopped the boat at several places to swim along the way, every one was beautiful and special. I would HIGHLY recommend working with this company as we had a fantastic time on board.
Yachtsailing team is top notch! They made the arrangements and took care of every detail; booking, provisions, skipper, etc. Our captain for the week was impeccable. We sailed the Cyclades; he knew the islands, he arranged for taxis in each port, and he navigated the high winds and big seas with ease. He was a kind man, professional in every way, and experienced. We chartered a catamaran that was spacious, clean, and in excellent condition. The electronics, refrigeration, heads/showers, engine, generators, stove, and AC all worked perfectly without incident. We will return to Greece and use YachtSailing.gr again. You can be confident booking with them!

Galissas is a sandy cosmopolitan beach with many amenities such as; sunbeds, umbrellas, water sports and taverns. The beach can be very crowded with the families and visitors from the hotel located at the edge of a nearby cliff. Seeing as you will be approaching with a yacht you can take advantage of the bay which has really nice waters to relax and swim in.
Located on the southwest cost of the island, Finikas beach is a small bay with the second largest port in Syros. It is a popular destination for those who are sailing as it offers shelter from the Meltemi (Northern Winds). Here you can stroll through the interesting village, enjoy some delicious food at one of the many fresh fish taverns or simply dive into the sea. The variety of choices makes it a nice stop when sailing around the island.
Vari Beach in the south-east side of the island is the most sheltered bay of Syros. A perfect location for families with young children. The calm sea and lack of wind make it ideal to visit by yacht and offers easy and safe anchorage.
This church is located in Ermoupolis and stands out for its magnificent architecture. Marble constitutes one of the main building materials, which achieve such an elegant result. If you are a fan of historical buildings, it is genuinely worth visiting.
The theater was constructed in 1864 and is considered a smaller version of the Scala di Milano, imitating the same Italian décor with classical design and red velvet seating. The exhibition area on the 3rd floor includes posters, photos of actors, authentic items of renowned personalities and other interesting entities. Still active today it is a major venue for hosting big events such as operas and many theatrical performances.
The town hall of Syros is one of the biggest in Greece and was designed by the famous architect Ernst Ziller. Surely this is a place many would want to visit, currently made up of the court house, archeological museum and mortgage registry.
If you are a fan of traditional Greek sweets then you must try the “Loukoumi” of Syros! One of the most famous sweets in the country and originated from this island. We suggest you buy a box or two, which will be empty before you know it!
Halvadopita (nougat pie) is the second most popular sweet on the island. Made up of dense white nougat crammed between two thin wafers. The basic ingredients are of honey, sugar, glucose, vanilla, egg whites and almonds.
The most famous cheese produced in Syros and one of the most renowned in Greece. It has a very spicy taste and pairs perfectly with a little ouzo. Definitely a must when visiting Syros during your sailing trip.
